Who Requires a Boating License in Florida?
If you’re looking to attain a boating license in Florida, the first thing you’ll need to check is whether you’re eligible, or whether you even need to. Did you know that the law in Florida states if you were born before January 1, 1988, you don’t need a license to operate a boat? If you were born after this date, however, you’ll need to get your certification.
There are a few exceptions, though. If you’re operating a motorboat of 10 horsepower or less, if you’re in a private lake or pond, or if you’re with someone who possesses the required Boating Safety Education Identification Card, you won’t need a license to operate your boat.
If none of the above scenarios apply to you, you should get your certification. Anyone who is over the age of 18 is eligible to apply for their boating license.
How to Get Your Florida Boating License
Once you are eligible and have determined you require a license, your first step will be to complete a boating safety course. You can do this at your own pace, either in one sitting or over a few days. Once you’ve completed the course, you’ll need to take and pass the exam. You’ll need a grade of at least 76% to pass.
There are two tests and two types of certifications you can get. The first is a temporary boating certificate. This version lasts for 90 days after it is first issued and is best suited to those who are only visiting the state for a vacation.
If you’re a Florida resident and would like a more permanent solution, you can take the official course to get your Boater Education Identification Card along with a lifetime certification.
