Destin History & Fishing Museum
The Destin History and Fishing Museum is located in the Historic Fort Walton Beach Landing and tells the story of the Destin area’s development as “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” from 1850 to the present day. The museum is located at 108 Stahlman Ave, Destin, FL 32541. Exhibits include artifacts, old photographs and newspaper articles that tell the story of Destin’s fishing industry. View this article for more information. The museum also includes a replica of an old bait shop.
Another place to visit is the Primrose fishing boat, which was in service from 1925 to 1968. The Primrose took advantage of the fishing grounds near shore and was powered by 12-year-old boys. There is a small exhibit of the boat’s history, nautical memorabilia and artwork on display as well as photos of local families. The descendants of the original family still live in Destin.
Fishing is another popular activity in Destin. Visitors can take a two-day guided fishing tour to catch grouper, sea trout or redfish. These tours will also teach them about various fishing techniques and help them enjoy the sport of fishing. The guides will also tell them about the local wildlife and how to use bait safely.
The museum also features the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings home, which was restored in 2006. The author of Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Yearling lived in this house. Besides being a resident of Destin, she wrote a book in the area. The museum’s collection includes over 10,000 pieces of artifacts, including many of her own.
There is also excellent diving in Destin, with several dive sites in the area from 57 feet to 100 feet deep. The area’s limestone outcroppings are covered with soft corals, sponges and tropical fish. Among the common species are grouper, cobia, snapper, and flounder.
The Emerald Coast Science Center is another great Destin attraction for kids. Not only is it a great place to educate kids on the world around them, but it’s also an enjoyable place for adults to visit. Open 10 am to 3 pm Tuesday through Saturday. There is a public beach access point on Okaloosa Island as well. The beach is perfect for swimming, fishing, and picnicking.
Visitors can also sail with dolphins. It’s a great experience and a unique way to meet new people. Plus, it’s one of the most memorable things to do in Destin. Tickets for the Buccaneer Pirate Cruise are $37 for adults and $22 for children ages four to 14. Reservations are highly recommended as the tour often sells out.
The Destin Harbor is also a great place to go for a day with the family. During the summer months, there are free concerts held in the harbor, and these are family-friendly events. Golf enthusiasts can also find some of the finest courses in the country at the Kelly Plantation Golf Club and Regatta Bay and Yacht Club. Check this out too.
