Cinco Bayou

Cinco Bayou

Cinco Bayou is a quaint little beach town located on the beautiful Gulf Coast of Florida. It’s only a short drive from downtown Destin, but it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere once you get there. There’s something so calming about this town that makes it a great place to unwind and relax after a long day at work or school. And since it’s only 45 minutes away from both Fort Walton Beach and Niceville, Cinco Bayou is also a great location for exploring the surrounding area. Learn more here.

Go for a walk along the beach

Cinco Bayou’s beach is absolutely gorgeous. It stretches for about 5 miles and is protected from the Gulf by a coral reef. The white sand beach is made even more beautiful by millions of seagrass fragments that are washed up by the Gulf’s waves. At low tide, you can also walk on the coral reef. There’s something so calming about walking along the beach while listening to the waves roll in, and I know I’m not the only one who loves this activity! If you’re lucky enough to visit the area during low tide, you can even walk on the coral reef! You can also rent a kayak or canoe and spend the day exploring the nearby waterways. The surrounding canals are full of mangrove forests and beautiful wildlife. If you’re up for a fun adventure, you can also kayak to nearby islands like Chokoloskee, which is full of wildlife and secluded beaches. Or you can try paddle boarding or fishing from the nearby docks.

Discover the local dive hole

One of the best things about living in the Florida Gulf Coast is the amazing diving you can experience right in your own backyard. Cinco Bayou is home to the Cinco Bayou Conservation Park, which is full of excellent fishing and diving holes. You can rent kayaks or snorkel gear at the park’s lodge and paddle around the lagoon looking for small fish like mullet, snapper and shrimp. Then swim down to the dive hole where you can explore shipwrecks and explore the many coral reefs and sea caves. There are so many great things to explore in the surrounding waters, including ship wrecks, sea caves, and tropical fish. You can also explore the surrounding waterways with kayaks or canoes. This is such a fun activity for any outdoorsy person. I highly recommend it!

Shop at the local antique stores

One great way to spend an afternoon in Cinco Bayou is to walk around the nearby antique stores. There are so many unique and surprisingly affordable stores in the area that offer antiques, beach decor and more. I love to go to Urban Coast for antiques and for beach decor. You can also stop at the Cinco Bayou Marketplace for a quick bite to eat, or the Cinco Bayou Golf Center for a quick round of golf. This little town is also home to the Gumbo Limbo Café, which serves amazing Gumbo Limbo! Gumbo Limbo is a unique Creole (Cajun) dish made with shrimp, okra, and other vegetables. You’ll never taste anything like this delicious dish, so I highly recommend you try it when you visit.

Spend an evening at the beach with your friends or loved ones

There’s so much to do in Cinco Bayou, but another great thing to do is spend an evening by the beach with your friends or loved ones. You can find plenty of local bands playing at bars in the area or visit the nearby Destin Commons Water Park for a refreshing swim. If you’re up for a more active activity, you can try out the Laser Tag or Glow Golf at the nearby SuperGolf Complex. If you have kids, you can also check out the Adventure Cove splash pad or the Dolphin Exploration Pier where you can go on guided tours with friendly dolphins. You can also go boating or fishing by renting a kayak or canoe. If you’re up for a more adventurous activity, you can try rappelling down the side of a cliff or opt for a more mellow activity like swimming with manatees at the nearby Destin Dolphin Research Center.
